Suwasamadhi Monastery
- Sri Lanka -
The Suwasamadhi temple occupies 15 acres of land in Nurugala Village in the Balapitiya Regional Secretariat Division of the Galle District, Southern Province. This land near Balapitiya Madu river is enriched with abundant biodiversity resources that fall under the category of ecologically important wetlands, The land is populated by mangrove plant communities endemic to the southern and southwestern coastal regions and belongs to the category of salt marsh wetlands. Also, the whole temple environment is like a meditation with the sweet sounds of various birds in this environment. The Suvasamadhi Monastery located in this holy place is a very ancient Temple.
The geological structure of a mountain in this place is fascinating. The large trees and various types of medicinal plants that have grown naturally in those rocky hills have given the environment a picturesque look. The local people refer the mountain as Medicine Hill considering the amount of herbs grown on the hill. During the Sumatra Tsunami tragedy in 2005, even people from the provinces of Kosgoda, Balapitiya, Ahungalla, Randombe, etc., who came for their protection, spent weeks on top of this hill seeking security. Therefore, this temple has even been designated by the government as an emergency shelter.
As a social service, at our temple a pre-school for the innocent children of the village has been held for past 17 years now.
Our temple, which is located near to Balapitiya Madu river in the southern province, is a beautiful and scenic place with a mountains, paddy fields and trees, black stone hills and a naturally aesthetic environment. Local and foreign tourists who visits Balapitiya Madu River also come to see the natural environmental beauty of our temple every day
